first day went well. i've already been assigned to a project starting tomorrow that was just finalized today. can't talk much about it yet, but should be cool. it looks like i'm now in an office of people as sarcastic as me, so that should be fun. i had forgotten how fun it is to work in more of a peer enviroment, with a lot of people close to my age and with a lot of similar interests.

Very excited about the Adrien Brody win for Best Actor. Anyone who has seen The Pianist knows he deserves it. And his reaction and acceptance speech was the highlight of the Oscars for me.
Too bad that Chicago won so much stuff, although I guess I should actually see it before passing further judgement. I just have a feeling it is one of those Best Picture wins that will have people scratching their heads 10 years from now. There have been a bunch of those lately. Anyone remember Shakespeare in Love? I mean, I liked the film, but it was hardly Best Picture material. And don't get me started on Gladiator.
At least The Pianist won Best Adapted Screenplay, so that's worth something.

For the better part of this week, I have had allergies so bad I can barely focus. Today is the first day since Sunday that I don't feel completely crappy. And I'm still on medication. This is the worst it's been in several years. I was hoping to skip town before the annual spring battle with allergies, but unfortunately it came early this year. I guess because of all the rain and then it has been fairly warm the last couple weeks. Everything is blooming.
It seems like it just gets worse each year, so it's just one more reason to move back up to a more northern climate. I will likely have some allergy issues in Chicago as well, but I doubt it will be anything as bad as here.

well, haven't been blogging much. between a bit of training/knowledge transfer at work and packing at home, there hasn't been much time. but making steady progress on everything.
just got done rebuilding my computer. this may be the last time. it's just not worth the hassle when I can buy a Dell for $600. the last 6 months have been a major hassle. it all started when I decided to switch back to IDE and sell my SCSI gear. the first IDE drive I used I had been using for storage, but once I made it the primary drive it failed in a month or so. so I go on Ebay and pick up a used Western Digital 20 gig, being the cheap guy that I am. It ends up failing after a couple weeks. So now I'm noticing a pattern. what's up with the hard drives? so i do a warranty replacement and get back a refurbed WD drive.
At this point, I'm thinking "Everything should just be peachy keen" and so my last backup is right before that around the end of January. well, a couple weeks ago the new drive starts with the hard resets and lockups, same as the others. but with the interviews and job stuff, most of February I'm preoccupied with other things and so I don't do a backup, although I am storing most important stuff on my second drive at this point, mainly frequent Outlook backups and my Money data file. I figured I had a couple more weeks before the drive failed and after all , checkdisk wasn't showing any issues yet (bad sectors, etc.) like I had seen with the other 2 drives.
So I get on the computer last Saturday planning to do a full backup that day. check email first thing in the morning. computer locks up. reboot. never comes back. the controller just completely goes. so I'm in okay shape, but I have lost some important (to me at least) coding I've done in the meantime. back up frequently, boys & girls. you never know.
by this time, I'm fed up. could be anything. bad power. a motherboard or RAM that's a bit funky. but something is screwing up my drives and I've had more problems with Western Digital than all other drives combined (except maybe IBM). So I decided to just rebuild since I don't have time for this anymore. I need a computer I can work on, not keep installing XP on over and over again.
so I'm back up now with a brand new motherboard, RAM, processor and SEAGATE drive. everything is great so far. So I could justify this and say I wanted a faster computer anyway. and that would be true. but by the time I bought all that I could have just bought a Dell. but I'm stubborn that way. however, this is probably the last time.
