is this the Dark Ages?

It's hard to believe how much you get used to broadband.  here at my mom's place it's either connecting over my Sprint phone connected to my laptop (and it's not a Vision phone either) or use my mom's free NetZero account on her computer.  neither option is particularly appealing.  i'm so used to cable modem and T1 speeds now that even dialup seems unbearably slow.  it's going to be interesting to see what happens in these very rural areas.  still no cable modem available.  phone lines aren't good enough or are too far from the digital drop for DSL in most cases.  a buddy of mine has been looking at options.  Verizon is offering fixed wireless for the affordable price of around $700 a month.  2-way satellite is still almost $100/month.  i really think it's going to end up being some sort of wireless. wireless is already allowing some up and coming countries to leapfrog traditional phone systems altogether.  the same thing may happen here as 3G and the next iterations continue to improve and coverage continues to expand.  i can get wireless web from Sprint here and a few years ago I had no Sprint signal at all.  it's going to be interesting to watch.

Weather contrast

Saturday morning in Chicago I walked out on my balcony to see a bit of snow coming down.  It snowed pretty hard for a few minutes, but was mostly just flurrying for quite a bit of the day.  Quite a change from San Diego to come home to.
